Position

The GPS should sit below the driver’s forward sightline, readable without looking down and reachable without leaving the helm. Do not mount a magnetic compass beside radios, speakers, ferrous U-bolts or powered electronics.

The two-point rule

Every handheld device needs both positive retention and an independent tether to the boat. Never tether equipment to a person where it can impede movement or create an entrapment risk.

Temporary RIBs

Carry a known kit: correctly sized clamp, short arm, device cradle, lanyard, rubber isolation strip and a small tool roll. Photograph the setup after the first successful day so it can be repeated.
