What makes a good burgee

It should respond in light air, remain visible against sea and sky, shed water and avoid wrapping around its staff. Contrasting tails or a small vane can improve readability.

Mounting

Place it high enough for clean air but low enough to avoid becoming a whip or snag. A removable clamp or socket is preferable on shared RIBs. Keep it clear of antennas and the navigator’s compass sightline.

How to use it

Watch changes over time rather than reporting every flick. Compare the burgee with water texture, flags on other boats and timed compass observations to separate a real shift from RIB yaw.
