Measure the wind, not the RIB
Stop or hold station consistently, keep clear of the console, crew and engine turbulence, and raise the sensor into clean air. A moving RIB measures apparent wind unless the system compensates correctly.
Use a repeatable observation
Agree an averaging period—often 10 to 20 seconds—then report time, position, mean direction, range and strength. A useful call is: ‘Mark 1, 1420, mean 082, range 074 to 091, 11 knots.’
Direction needs its own discipline
A speed-only meter plus a reliable hand-bearing compass is often the cleanest system. Keep instruments away from radios, speakers, steel brackets and powered mounts when taking compass readings.
